Well, That's Weird: History

Jack-o'-Lanterns Were Turnips First

True, odd moments from history, told short and checked against at least two sources.

The story

(8) Before pumpkins, jack-o'-lanterns were turnips. They looked terrifying. (22) In Ireland and Scotland, folks carved scary faces into turnips, lit a candle inside, and set them on walls, gates, or windowsills. (20) Ireland's National Museum still keeps a "ghost turnip" cast from around nineteen hundred, donated in nineteen forty-three from County Donegal. (24) Nineteen thirty-eight school papers from Cavan and Tipperary describe the same: a hollowed turnip with a face, a candle, called Jack o' the lantern.

(27) The name ties to a folk tale: Stingy Jack tricked the Devil, got barred from heaven and hell, and wandered with a coal in a carved turnip. (17) Irish immigrants brought the custom to America. Pumpkins were bigger, softer, and far easier to hollow out. (15) What really happened? Your porch pumpkin is the New World upgrade of an Irish turnip.
