The Windsor Pumpkin Boat Regatta
True, odd moments from history, told short and checked against at least two sources.
The story
(18) Every fall in Nova Scotia, folks have raced across a lake in hollowed-out giant pumpkins. (18) Meet the Windsor Pumpkin Regatta on Lake Pesaquid in Windsor, Nova Scotia — pumpkin capital country. (20) Danny Dill started it in nineteen ninety-nine. His dad, Howard Dill, bred the Atlantic Giant pumpkin. (20) That first year, five brave souls hollowed out giant pumpkins and paddled them across the lake.
(24) The course is about half a mile. Crowds grew into the thousands, and towns from Wisconsin to Vermont copied the idea. (23) Danny Dill said you need three things: water, a giant pumpkin, and somebody crazy enough to paddle it. (16) What really happened? A weigh-off town turned Halloween gourds into boats. Pure, delightful weird.
