Well, That's Weird: Cryptids

Whalers Found a "Baby Sea Serpent" Inside a Whale

Cryptids are creatures people report but science has never confirmed. In each episode Poss Jonah tells where the legend comes from, what people say they saw, and what a sensible explanation might be, then lets you decide.

The story

In 1937, whalers in Canada opened up a sperm whale and found what folks called a baby sea serpent. And they took its picture, Meet Cadborosaurus, Caddy for short, named after Cadboro Bay in Victoria, British Columbia. Witnesses describe a horse-like head, a long neck, humps in a row behind it, and flippers front and back.

Over 200 sightings were collected over a century. That 1937 carcass came out of the whale at Naden Harbour. A sample went to the provincial museum and the director's best guess? An unborn baleen whale. Yeah, whatever. In 1943 two police officers saw a huge sea serpent with a horse-like head. But then one grabbed binoculars and it was just a big bull sea lion leading six others all bobbing in a line.

So, one critter, or a lot of different critters, all getting called Caddy? Take a look at that old photo and you decide. What are them Canadians up to up there is what I want to know. Well, That's Weird.
